Our 20th Illuminator - Dora Sugimoto
President, Special Secretary as Advisor for Solidarity Economy
Hello
I'm Dora Sugimoto. I was born in the city of São Paulo, Brazil in February 1953. I graduated in Geography (1978), from the University of São Paulo and have an MBA in Public Policies from the University of Brasília (2011/20012). I am a member of the Popular Solidarity Economy Movement and the Workers' Party since 2000, and Coletivo Flores pela Democracia (Flowers for Democracy) since 2005. I worked with the Popular Women’s Housing Movements and Solidarity Economy throughout the Sewing Cooperatives- COOPERCOST (2000), in the Popular Economy Group-GEP. With the support of CESE - Ecumenical Service Coordination, professional machines were purchased and the Sewing Cooperative started to supply uniforms for government offices. The “Flowers for Democracy” movement emerged when LULA was imprisoned in 2018, demanding LULA’s freedom, and nowadays we place our fighting flags on feminists projects and social justice. |

Solidarity Economy
The solidarity economy movement in Brazil is a democratic economic alternative that aims to empower participants and decentralize wealth in communities. The movement is based on the values of self-management, cooperation, and social justice.
